If you have a vacuum that uses a HEPA, I strongly recommend cleaning them as regularly as possible. HEPA filters where actually designed for clean rooms used, for example, in the manufacturing of semiconductor chips. They are designed to have a low air flow rate and severely restrict the suction power of your vacuum cleaner, and that’s when they’re clean. These filters pick up very fine particles and become clogged quickly.

I know none of use wants to clean the filter every time we vacuum, but that’s exactly what I recommend. The HEPA filter may keep the exhaust air clean, but how much dust and dirt are you leaving in the carpet because of lost suction. Furthermore, the HEPA is probably not the only filter you need to clean.

Most vacuum cleaners using a filtration system have at least an additional pre-filter. This filter will also reduce the suction when it becomes dirty and should be cleaned regularly. Not too long ago, we where visiting my mother-in-law and my kids spilled something on the floor. I grabbed here bagless vacuum to pick it up. I quickly noticed that her vacuum had very little suction. Of course, the first thing I did was to check the filters. Not only was there a HEPA filter and a pre-filter, but I even found a third one. She had been using the vacuum for quite some time but was completely unaware of the third filter.

Make sure you know where all the filters are and clean them regularly. Not only will your carpet be cleaner, but you can extend the life of the vacuum motor.
