There are a few different home made carpet cleaners I’ve used, and some I’ve heard from others. You can do a fine job with home made cleaners and avoid all the harmful chemicals contained in store bought brands and saves you quite a bit of money.
I’m assuming the use of some type of extraction cleaning machine here. The one that seems to work the best for me is simply adding 1/8 cup of baking soda and about 1/4 tsp. of laundry detergent to a gallon of hot water. Make sure the solution is dissolved before applying it to your carpet. Baking soda dissolves very quickly in water. Make sure you’re not using a laundry detergent that contains bleach. When it doubt, test the carpet cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area. Another version is to distilled or white vinegar - alone or with a small amount of laundry soap. If you have a separate reservoir for the solution, you can add straight vinegar to that and hot water to the tank. Note: If you use any type of detergent, you’ll need to keep the solution weak or it will leave a residue. If your carpets are very dirty and need a stronger cleaning solution, take the extra step of rinsing the carpet with plain water. I read one persons experience of using a small amount of Simple Green with water to do the cleaning, then rinsing with water and vinegar. I would say the rinsing solution should be about 1/4 cup of vinegar to a gallon of water. I’m sure this method could work very well.
