Guide to carpet cleaning and removing carpet stains. So many spots…so many stains…so little time. With so many different types of stain causing accidents and wear, you need direct access to specific solutions for specific problems, and that’s what you’ll find here. I’ll cover some basic strain removal tips then list some other articles and resources where you’ll learn how to treat any and every type of stain.

Cleaning Spills Before They Stain.

  1.  Blot the spill with paper towels, a white terry cloth towel, or other suitable, highly absorbent cloth. The object here is to localize and remove the spill before it penetrates the carpet backing. It doesn’t matter if it’s juice or oil; use your cloth to localize and extract as much of the spot as possible first.
  2. Don’t use your wet extraction machine on fresh spills or other new spots. Whether it’s one of the portable machines or
your full sized carpet cleaning machine, you should save them for regular carpet cleaning and old stain removal. Why? You ask…The first thing these machines do is inject a large amount of water and solution into your carpet. This solution will penetrate the carpet backing and the padding underneath. Granted, most of the spill will be removed, but how much will be forced into your carpet padding only to magically re-appear later. This is what we call “wickback”.
  3. Avoid “wickback” by removing as much of the spot as possible with a dry cloth then gently remove the remainder by applying small amounts of carpet cleaner, or spot remover coupled with light scrubbing and blotting action.

Regular use of a good carpet protector will block spills and stains from penetrating carpet fibers and even the backing.

High Traffic Areas.

High traffic areas may seem unavoidable, but if your willing to put forth a little extra effort, you can keep these areas looking just as good as that carpet under the couch.

  1. The first step is to vacuum these areas daily. It’s the dirt that causes damage to fibers and permanently worn looking spot.
  2. Again, prevent high traffic problems before they occur. Regular cleaning and additional us of a carpet protector in these areas will protect the fibers from excessive wear.
  3. As soon as you start to see those dingy, gray areas in near the doorways and in the halls, it’s time to clean. I’m not saying it’s time to clean all the carpets in your house. These areas should be cleaned with more regularity than non-highly trafficked areas. The dirt which collects - combined with foot traffic - is the cause of fiber damage and permanent
    carpet wear.
  4. Use area rugs at entry points and hallways.
Just remember that regular cleaning and the use of carpet protector will save you time and a lot of money later.
